SELF PORTRAIT 1999                          OIL ON BOARD 68 x 52 cm
John Dowling was born (1963) and raised in rural Ontario, Canada.

Attending the University of Guelph to study Art from 1985, he received numerous accolades and scholarships. He emigrated to the UK in 1989 and completed a first class BA(hons) in London.

In 1990 he spent five months travelling through Europe, culminating in three months painting and drawing in remote areas of eastern Turkey.

John has lived and worked permanently in London since 1990.  His work has been primarily focused on portraiture/figurative subjects as well as urban landscape, drawing inspiration from some of the darker, grittier elements of the world around us. Atmosphere and psychological tension are key elements of his work, as is a firm belief in the value of representational tradition.
He has undertaken commissions and shown in both Canada and the UK, and his work resides in various private collections throughout Britain, Europe, Canada and the U.S.

In March 2000, he travelled to the Balkans to begin work on several series of paintings based on what he witnessed in post-war Kosovo. Since returning to London he has continued to develop this body of work.
Very much concerned with the human side of events, his recent Kosovo project looks at the aftermath of war and the consequences for the inhabitants of Kosovo as well as aspects of day-to-day life amidst the ever present international military forces.
Working from a personal perspective, it goes beyond the superficial picture portrayed by the established media. Covering many overlooked visual and psychological details of Kosovo's situation, it presents a lasting portrayal of a saga often too readily forgotten.
